Mike & The Dog Reunite at 1pm

By Mike Silva ~ October 16th, 2009. Filed under: Sports Media Commentary.

Just got off a flight from Florida. I have been out of the NY sports landscape, save for the Yanks/Angels, the last few days. One of the first things I noticed was a “tweet” from Sal Licata indicating that Mike Francesa and Chris Russo will reunite for a bit at 1pm today. Hmm… Sounds like a publicity stunt by both individuals. Dog probably wants to remind the Sirius-less members of the audience that he still exists, while Francesa tries to inject some life into his boring show. Perhaps both will learn today how, despite their bank accounts growing, neither has a better career without the other. Mike and the Mad Dog was an entertaining despite all the bias and lack of factual analysis. Good talk radio is two individuals (see Joe & Evan) who can chat intellectually about the issues and entertain. Mike and the Dog separate taking calls quite simply doesn’t get it done. I am sure this is all Mike’s doing because Chernoff would never be this imaginative or willing to check his ego at the door.

I will be listening and take some time to post thoughts. No doubt the “crack committee” will be in full force finding ways to justify the Angels in the ALCS. Memo to Doggie – ain’t gonna happen with Fuentes closing out the ninth inning.

Update 3:30 PM: If you missed it live you can listen to Dog intro the show on WFAN.com and talk sports with Mike. I will provide commentary later on.

LOL, putting “factual analysis” and Joe “Who’s kidding who!” Beningo & Evan “Silver spoon” Roberts in the same sentence is quite ridiculous.

This is making me so happy, it’s unreal.

I never said Joe and Evan were factual :) , although Evan Roberts gets a bad rap. The kid actually has potentially to be the star of that station if they gave him his own show. Joe is just a bad comedy act, but he has a following, like it or not.

I have no issues with Mike and the Dog as a pair. Mike solo is the worst that radio has to offer. I understand they aren’t the most up to date duo, but its not terrible radio IMO

So what you’re saying is NYBD > Mike Francesa? Can we get this on record?

When it comes to baseball I believe Howard and I are every bit the expert of Francesa. Mike goes back further, so we can’t offer firsthand perspective on the seventies Yankees, but I don’t see how he knows anymore than us. I would bet my full years salary we watch more baseball. Also, despite your criticisms., I have embraced modern statistical analysis to some degree. I don’t use all the numbers that you guys do, but I have come along on some metrics. Tell me when Mike has done anything in that regard? Finally, there are times we have the same guests as well. The gap between terrestrial radio and us has closed somewhat.

Now I don’t have the reach, or brand name, but that has as much to do with time on the job (3 years) and money.

We are the militia in the revolutionary war. Its only a matter of time before the British are defeated, it just will take longer :)

I’m pretty sure the only reason you’ve “embraced” any statistics is because of my, and BBTF, and others’ criticisms. But that’s neither here nor there. Nor did statistics have to do with my question, but OK!

I wish you luck in your quest to topple Francesa and take over the thrown of NYC sports talk radio. I expect no less than 3 Francesa criticism posts a day here on out.

Isn’t embracing customer feedback part of the process? That is where I and the mainstream differ. I don’t begrudge criticism, I actually look into it. If only radio would do the same they wouldn’t be on the verge of the apocalypse. As for taking over NY, well miles to go, but stranger things have happened right? Joe Benigno has a show in NY!

I gotta give ya credit on that one Mike, you definitely have seen the light when it comes to valuing the concrete evidence we as fans have to show the true value of a player. The belief in value of intangibles could still be there, but correct me if I am wrong, your assessment of players has changed in that these intangibles are unquantifiable and aren’t worth over-paying for (see Alex Cora) or getting rid of a better player (Ramon Castro for Omir Sadness) for a gritty one.

As for the wfan thing, I have no opinion. If its talk on the radio I will listen unless its Colin Cowherd. Damn I hate that guy.

I think intangibles are important, but you have to balance everything out. I always believed that.

I am reading Vince Gennaro’s “Diamond Dollar”.I think the best line of the book is when he says building a baseball team is part art and part science. I think you need to know when to use one versus the other. Any business that deals with people and managing them is the same.
