Tabata, Milledge, Sterling, Mess at Citi

By Mike Silva ~ September 7th, 2009. Filed under: Morning Digest.

- Tyler Kepner writes about how last year’s Xavier Nady/Damaso Marte deal looks pretty good for the Pirates. Ross Ohlendorf is quietly having a great year, Jose Tabata has developed nicely, and Daniel McCuthen is having a solid year in Indianapolis. With Nady’s injury all you have to show for it is a lefty specialist in Marte. I always believed Ohlendorf was thrown in Girardi’s doghouse after he got lit up in the Subway Series. It was the same day Carlos Delgado had 9 RBI’s.

- Tim Belcher remembers Derek Jeter’s first career big league hit.

- Lastings Milledge seems to have finally found his stroke in Pittsburgh (2/13/.328). Pittsburgh beat reporter John Perotto described a more contrite Milledge earlier in the season. I hope for his sake he has left the chip on his shoulder back in Washington. If so Milledge may be able to have a career just yet.

- Yankees affiliates Scranton, Tampa, and Staten Island have all made the MILB postseason

- I still don’t think Daniel Murphy is the solution at first base. Despite the improvement offensively he doesn’t come across as a guy that will hit for enough power or drive in runs. Murph, in my opinion, appears to be a #2 hitter without a position on the field. The key question is the development of Ike Davis. Will Davis be ready mid-season 2010? If so, than perhaps you live with Murphy at first and beef up left field with a power hitter. The funny part about Davis is that, unlike Milledge and Martinez, he has only just started to get fanfare. Ironically, he has put up numbers this year that we never saw from Martinez or Milledge during their minor league days. Perhaps Davis will be more about production than potential.

- The Sunday column on Citi Field seemed like the media piling on the team. I have been to the ballpark several times this year and it’s a good facility. You can criticize management for the way they handle their business, but the ballpark is legit. Best quote from Cowbell Man: “I am all for rebuilding Shea — it was a dump, but it was our dump”. Sorry Cowbell Man, but I am going to pick on you here. That statement is a synopsis of what is wrong with the organization. It’s never about moving forward or being the best, but taking pride in your “dump”.

- Even when it’s about Derek Jeter, John Sterling makes it about himself.

- Listen to a replay of last night’s show. Howard and I talked about David Robertson, Andy Pettitte, not trading for Jon Garland, and the Mets financial situation among other things.

I’m proud to say I was against the Milledge deal when it was made and it looks. Was Milledge imature? Yes, and you could say it took the Nationals embarassing him by sending him to the minors to wake him up but still there was too much talent there to just ship out.

I neve delt with Milledge and I know those who did say he was a first class jerk but in a year or two he could be the leader of an exciting team in Pittsburgh while the Mets wait for Fernando Martinez to come back from his tenth trip to the DL.

  2. Matt Pignataro

Mike, I could definitely see Thole being a number two hitter in his lineup. He puts the ball in play and has good plate discipline. Two factors, I believe your number two hitter should have.

Not a bad idea. Let’s see more from him, but he is the type of hitter that you would look for in the #2 hole. Need to see his plate discipline a bit more though.
