Ernie Harwell Fighting Cancer

By Mike Silva ~ September 4th, 2009. Filed under: Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants, Outside the Apple.

Legendary broadcaster Ernie Harwell learned recently he has a tumor in the area of the bile duct. It is incurable. Harwell is 91 years old and his family and doctors have decided against surgery.

Interviewing Ernie Harwell was one of my favorite moments during the history of this show. Back in July of 2007 he released his personal scrapbook and website eharwell.com

We chatted about starting his career with the Atlanta Crackers of the Southern Association, getting traded to Brooklyn (yes traded for catcher Cliff Dapper), moving over to the Giants and announcing Bobby Thomson’s “shot heard around the world”, and his 42 years with the Detroit Tigers. It was very surreal to speak to someone that interviewed a legend like Ty Cobb. He even gave young broadcasters in the audience some great career advice.

I am sure I speak for everyone here at NYBD and in the audience in wishing Ernie and his family the best. If you are interested in hearing a replay of the Ernie Harwell interview you can download it here.
