Niese Out for Year, Reyes Has Scar Tissue

By Mike Silva ~ August 5th, 2009. Filed under: Mike Silva.

Howard just sent me this official word from the Mets.

The injury to Jonathan Niese is pretty clear cut. He is out for the year thanks to a complete tear of the right upper hamstring tendon from the bone. He is expected to be ready for spring training.

Tough break for Niese who made huge strides this year. The problem with this injury is that you now have to hope the real Jonathan Niese is what you have seen the last few months. It would have been nice to see him over a larger sample when evaluating the 2010 rotation. I say pencil him in for a spot and bring in your usual inventory of scrap heap pickups (i.e. Livan Hernandez) in the event he fails this coming spring. Hopefully this won’t stunt his development.

Meanwhile, the MRI on Jose Reyes showed significant scar tissue and inflammation behind the right knee, related to the hamstring tendon injury, which has caused continued pain.  Reyes will remain in New York for manual physical therapy in an effort to break up the scar tissue and reduce the inflammation.

In other words, there is still no progress on Jose Reyes. This is one of the most bizarre injuries I have ever seen.

What is bizarre is the way the Mets front office is reporting it. I am sure it is not the first example of this type of injury in baseball history. A real team would have made an announcement and had done with it. The mets and the truth, however, are constantly in a wrestling match. They are natural enemies.
