Could Yanks Get Halladay On Their Terms?

By Mike Silva ~ July 29th, 2009. Filed under: Mike Silva.

We now enter the 72 hour mark for the trading deadline. Rumors are abound regarding Roy Halladay and the Phillies, Angels, and Red Sox. You hear the Yankees are not interested, but a definitive stance has never been communicated. The latest news has Boston “amping up their efforts” to obtain Doc. The Phillies played hardball with Toronto by refusing to add Kyle Drabek, their best prospect, to the deal. Their loss can now be the Yankees gain. Could the Yankee get Halladay on their terms? What I mean by this is can you make a deal to satisfy Toronto and keep the Joba Chamberlain/Phil Hughes combo? Because of the Yankees farm system I say yes.

When the Halladay talks started I believed Joba or Hughes would have to centerpiece the deal. As we get closer it’s apparent that other teams are unwillingly to put their number one prospect in the deal, instead settling for offering a quantity of solid minor leaguers. a package centered on Austin Jackson and having Toronto choose one pitcher and one hitter from the group of Jeremy Bleich, Zach McAllister, Austin Romine, and Eduardo Nunez is equally good, if not better, than what already has been offered by other clubs.

This deal would give Toronto solid prospects at positions, CF and either SS or C, that are difficult to find. McAllister is not that far away from the big leagues and Bleich has tremendous upside despite his recent AA struggles. Clay Buchholtz is better prospect than any of the Yankees guys, but Toronto would fetch solid depth at multiple positions. Rebuilding doesn’t happen with just one really good prospect, but a replenished farm system. I would give up Joba and keep my prospects, but Yankees management is not keen on that idea. The best alternative is to give them a quantity package that doesn’t include Jesus Montero.

Toronto already went back on their self imposed deadline. Do you honestly believe they won’t trade him in division? The Red Sox seem to be very aggressive in their pursuit and that should strike fear in the Yankees. While you hope that Joba matures, CC Sabathia can overcome his playoff woes, and Burnett stays healthy, Boston will throw a 1-2 punch of Beckett and Doc Halladay the next year and a half. It seems every time things matter since 2004 the Red Sox have been better than the Yankees. This situation is no different. Land Doc Halladay and you can have Joba limited to pitch counts for a lot longer than you thought. Sabathia/Halladay would be the best 1-2 punch in baseball history. Better yet, both are innings eaters. What an advantage to have a fresh bullpen on a nightly basis.

J.P Ricciardi has played poker long enough. The deck has turned against him and the Yankees should pounce. Don’t let Halladay get to Boston. You have invested too much in the farm system and should be able to get Doc on your terms.

The yankees are not going to get Halladay. You have to give something up of real value to get something of real value. Just like many clubs, the Yankees are emotionaly tied to their prospects. They hold on to the notion that their player is going to be the next Tim Hudson or Albert Pujols and that’s why Toronto wants them. The Yankees want to keep all of their definate cant miss prospects and they want to pawn off their lesser prospects in that same category to Toronto for Roy “Cant miss CY Young” Halladay. Ricardi is not stupid. he know’s who the real yankee prospects are. The Sox had to give up Hanely Ramirez to acquire Beckett. Both team’s lost a real asset, but both teams gained one back. That’s how Ricardi is going to play this Halladay trade. He want’s a garuntee and I dont blame him.

The Yankees have a legit shot at landing Halladay without giving up Joba or Hughes. The reason? They have the ability to take Vernon Wells (worst contract in MLB) from Toronto along with Halladay and that is what will happen. Look for a Austin Jackson,Austin Romine and a 3rd lower prospect to the Jays and the Yankees will reveive Doc and Wells.

If you read some articles on ESPN insider or listen to others who are closer to the workings of this situation, it really appears that Halladay is staying put on August 1st. Ricard apparently hasn’t blinked in his offer and is apparently serious about the deadline he imposed for last night.

Also, the reports about Boston offering Bucholz, Lowrie, Bowden, Masterson etc. was shot down last night. It really appears that the Red Sox’s level of interest is Johan Santana talks 2.0 (ie. make sure he doesn’t go to the yankees for a basket of balls). Boston needs another hitter more than another pitcher.

On a side note, according to Rosenthal’s report this morning, the Blue Jays really like Bleich which goes back to one of your eariler posts Mike where one scout (correct me if I am wrong) stated that Bleich is probably the closest to the bigs out of all of the yankee farm players. Again, very intriguing and it goes back to what one of your guests said a while ago that when it comes to evaluating talent in the farm, sometimes you can’t just go by the numbers; sometimes you have to watch the player live and then make an evaluation.

I would hate to have to part with Austin Jackson. Believe it or not, I would rather see Jesus Montero go. We have future catchers, we don’t have future CF. Maybe offer Melky, Montero, and one from column A and one from B.

The Phillies and Indians agreed on a deal sending Lee to Philly. Very interesting to see what happens with Halladay now.

Lee isnt even in the same league as Halladay. Take out Lee’s 2008 fluky season ONE HE WILL LIKLEY NEVER REPLICATE AGAIN and you seen the garbage Philly gave up to get him. A punch of older secondary prospects struggling at the AAA level. Without giving up their decent good prospects like Drabek Brown or Taylor lolol

I wouldnt even consider Brown and Taylor can’t miss guys and Drabek still hasnt pitched at AAA.

Toronto refused those 3 and wanted Happ thrown in as well.
