Fresh Start, Same Result, 11 Day Hiatus, Banner Day

By Mike Silva ~ July 17th, 2009. Filed under: Morning Digest.

- Mets come back from the All Star break and its like things never stopped. No hitting, bad breaks, and a new injury to boot. Said it before, and will say this again, we are stuck in the baseball version of Groundhog Day.

- When you heard that Fernando Martinez had pain in the back of his knee you had to know it was not good. The Mets secretly send him for meniscus surgery during the break. This team must have a former CIA agent on staff with all this cloak and dagger stuff.

- Glad to see Keith back from his sabbatical. He spent almost two weeks tanning while the rest of us suffered watching this team. We all know who the smart one is.

- Keep it up with those baby steps Ollie. Seriously, Perez was ok, but Atlanta hit a few rockets off him early in the ballgame. Let’s look at the positive, he had a couple of innings where it took less than 10 pitches to retire the side and, despite 4 walks, his control was much better. Maybe we have overrated Perez all this time. I will admit guilt in that department. We looked too much at the second half of 2008 and not enough at the first half. We remember Game 7 against St. Louis, but not the shaky outing in Game 4. We talk about the 15 wins in 2007, but forget he “spit the bit” the final weekend of the season. Lowe is a top of the rotation starter, and maybe Perez is just a number 5 starter with flashes of brilliance.

- Perez vs. Lowe didn’t quite have the build up, or result, you would have expected earlier this year.

- Nice ovation for Jeff Francoeur from the home crowd. If you read the internet you would have thought Atlanta fans were ready to drive him to New York themselves.

- You already saw one benefit of the Francoeur for Church swap: Frenchy actually was in the lineup.

- The SNY text poll (those darn polls again!) stated that 70% of Mets fans liked the Francoeur trade. Was this rigged or are fans on the internet a small portion of the population?

- So five or six teams are talking with Omar? You know what happens to teams like the 2009 Mets? Steve Reed for Jason Bay. Bring up the kids, stand pat, and start to plan for 2010.

- The NY Times brought back Banner Day for Mets fans. This kind of humor is funnier when it happens to other teams.

- There is this perception from Mets fans that Angel Berroa is a slick fielder. Newsflash, he isn’t. He was a butcher in spring training with the Yanks and has made as many as 28 errors in a season. In 2000 he made 54 errors playing for Class A Visalia. Just because your Latino and can’t hit doesn’t make you a good fielder.

Or 70% of fans are idiots. The same people participating in these text polls are the same ones who call in to WFAN.
