First Place, John Henry, Pumpkin, Manny

By Mike Silva ~ July 10th, 2009. Filed under: Morning Digest.

- The Yankees are now tied for first place with the Red Sox. You have to keep going back to their 0-8 record against Boston and wonder the shape they would be in with just a couple of wins. Just two wins would put them 4 games up and a .500 record would have them 8 games ahead and cruising in the AL East.

- I wonder what John Henry was thinking last night after the Red Sox lost to KC? He tweets constantly and likes to remind everyone that “his team” didn’t spend $400 million dollars. Well John, if you spent a few million more on Teixeira, you probably would be running away with all of baseball.

- Looks like Livan Hernandez has turned into a pumpkin. I said numerous times during spring training that Hernandez would be batting practice if his command was off. That is exactly what happened his last two starts.

- Mark Teixeira’s homerless streak started when he played the Mets. Wonder if the power outage bug from across town rubbed off on him. Nothing a trip to Minnesota won’t solve. Interesting to see if the Yanks own Target Field next year.

- Watch Anaheim cause Joba fits. Melancon was called up, but no corresponding move was announced. Pete Abe thinks its Robertson or Albaladejo. It better not be Brett Tomko because it’s a shoo in that you will see him sometime in the fifth or sixth tonight.

- The story of the Mets season came in the first. Run in, two on, and Fernando Tatis hits a long fly ball that appears to tie the game. Alas it dies at the Citi Field warning track. Game over.

- Don’t believe that one player can impact a lineup? When the Mets were out in LA, they lost 3 games to the Manny-less Dodgers. Torre’s crew only scored 10 runs in those games. They scored 11 last night alone, and another 12 in the series, for a total of 23. Manny’s presence lengthened the lineup and made everyone better. Just the reason why I thought he would have been perfect for this Mets team.

- The Oakland A’s are going to retire Rickey Henderson’s number 24.

- What a bad week for Marty Foster. Derek Jeter calls him out, he is involved in a wild bang/bang play with Dan Murphy at first, and last night Gary Sheffield told him where to go. Might be time for a trip down to the minors. Oh wait, that can’t happen with professional umpires.

- You get the feeling Cody Ransom is wearing thin on the Yankees fans. It’s like when the Mets were flying high and the fans complained about Julio Franco as their pinch hitter. These are good problems people.

- Listen to the NYBD Mets and Yankees Dynasty Rosters, my response to the immature rantings of a certain WFAN morning host, and a little Roy Halliday rumor mill on the latest edition of NYBD radio.

“I said numerous times during spring training that Hernandez would be batting practice if his command was off.”

You could say this about just about any pitcher in baseball. This is not analysis, this is not taking a stand. It’s like saying “I told you, the stock market fluctuates” after seeing a stock market crash.

Can we get through one post without a “back patting” session? When was the last time you made a post saying you were wrong about something?

    Livan needs to go.

Jeez, the commenting form here is killing me. I post a comment with one name and it doesn’t go through, so I try another. Then both names show up. Am I being censored? Ha.

Livan doesn’t have the kind of stuff anymore that allows for him to be off on his command. We saw that during the spring. That was the point of the statement.

Of course you could say that about any pitcher, Livan just doesn”t have any margin for error

No, not being censored, any comment sent through a proxy server will be sent to admin for approval. Unfortunately, this is because of the spam bots.

The Oakland A’s are going to retire Rickey Henderson’s number 24

Knowing Rickey, he will be asking to re-negociate his MLB pension after receiving this honor!

That is a great line DUDX!
