Former Mets/Yanks Take on Subway Series and NY

By Mike Silva ~ June 26th, 2009. Filed under: Mike Silva.

Had a chance to ask former Mets and Yankees first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz on twitter (yes I verified it) his thoughts about the Subway Series. Here are some of my questions and his answers.

MS: Did you enjoy your time in Flushing or the Bronx better?

DM: I think that’s obvious. I was in a bad place mentally in Flushing. No one’s fault but mine. Mets helped me prepare for the Bronx. If I had to choose it would be the Yankees. I didn’t really give Flushing a chance and I was bent up about being traded twice. Location had nothing to do with it. I really love NY, I really do.

MS: People forget that you were one of the best defensive first baseman the Mets have had next to Hernandez.

DM: Thank You. And honestly I played the worst defense of my life that year. I am still embarrassed for how bad I played there.  I’ve always said my glove gets too much attention and my bat doesn’t get enough. I’m very humble hitting the exact opposite with the glove.

MS: What is your favorite Subway Series memory?

DM: Good question. I know my least was making an error on a dribbler that Ruben Sierra hit and popping my hamstring on deck. Yes I said I stayed in the game because it was like my first multi hit game as a Met, but me going on the DL helped the team!!!!!!

MS: Are the players as into the Subway Series as the fans?

DM: Not really. The Mets have Philly and the Yanks have Boston and everyone else you play. The fans enjoy it that’s all that matters. I will say this: Dodgers/Angels had a phenomenal atmosphere like a playoff game. Made for a fun weekend

Currently Doug is playing for Joe Torre out in Los Angeles and on the 60 day DL. I want to thank him for answering some of my questions.
