Report: Yanks Slow Down On Street, Interested In Bell

By Frank Russo ~ June 18th, 2009. Filed under: Rumor Mill.

Our main Yankee source down is Tampa has informed us that Yankees management has, for now, “cooled their interest” in Colorado’s Huston Street, because of what our source called “Outrageous demands for him.”

Apparently, Colorado GM Dan O’Dowd wants at least two top flight prospects and at least one major league ready player for Street. The Yankees, rightfully, are of the belief that as the trade deadline gets closer, the cost for the Street will go down. While the bullpen is still a major question mark, Cashman is in no hurry to make a deal, especially with Brian Bruney back in the fold.

Our source also told us that the club also has “strong interest” in San Diego reliever Heath Bell. Many in the Yankee organization feel that he would be a perfect complement to Bruney in the “Bridge to Mariano.” There is reason to believe that San Diego might be inclined to accept a combination package of upper and lower level prospects for their burly closer. Bell, incidentally, is having his best season ever with a 2-1 record and a 1.32 ERA with 18 saves.

Passing Thoughts
It’s really surprising that no one on New York sports talk radio mentioned the atrocious 5th inning call by Larry Vanover last night that cost the Yankees a run. Of course, we give full credit to John Lannan, who pitched 8.1 fantastic innings, but the fact is, blatantly horrendous calls like the one Vanover made effect the outcomes of games. Because of the poor quality of umpiring, I feel instant replay should also be utilized for on field calls.

Interesting report Frank. Bell might be a nice fit for the yankees. Are they looking at any centerfield candidates? Melky has played pretty well, however, I do not believe he is a player you can rely on for the whole year.

The guy who put the phillies jerseys into the cement at Citifiled got fired last week from Hunt. I didnt agree with what he did but he was a friend of mine through our job. Someone else ratted on him when the story started to spread. They pulled up some of the fanwalk bricks and found one jersey. I dont think they will do the other 2 spots until the season is over. I believe in second chances. He was a good guy who was always willing to lend a hand or money if a guy needed it. It was just a stupid prank. Its not like the foundation was flawed or something like that – I cant believe how mad some people got over this.
