Energy, Apathy, and Citi Field Strikes Back

By Mike Silva ~ June 10th, 2009. Filed under: Mike Silva.

- I criticized the Mets fans earlier this year. At the time I was tired of the apathy, complaints, and overall silliness that the fan base had demonstrated over a span of two years. Since then I have made a point to step back and critically access the atmosphere at Citi Field. Last night the fans were clearly a 10th man on the field. The crowd was loud, intense, and, even in the face of adversity, supportive. I am a big enough man to admit when I am wrong – Mets fans you showed me.

- To contrast, I thought I was watching an episode of “Six Feet Under” when I turned on My Nine. AJ Burnett took the Yanks right out of the game and the Sox fans sat back and waited for their inevitable victory. I almost thought Michael Kay was about to sit Shiva.

- I don’t want to make this overshadow the great Mets win, but the umpiring continues to be borderline amateurish. The botched call at home plate by Lance Barksdale is inexcusable. Even Jon Heyman was quoted on twitter as saying this is the worst umpiring he has ever seen. I think it may be time to seriously clean house and bring in some new umpiring blood.

- The Yankees and Boston is starting to look very much like Braves/Mets circa 1998.

- Did Citi Field take offense to what Chipper Jones said? Seven homers and it was nearly eight on the Tatis double off the war. Like Keith said “push the fences back”.

- Hernandez claims that Citi is smaller than the old Astrodome. It’s a great point that I never thought of.

- Maybe AJ Burnett should move to the bullpen?

- When I was a kid playing wiffle ball on 18th ave. and 72nd street we use to have some fun rules. On 4th of July we would award the batter an automatic grand slam if you hit the eagle on top of the American flag. No one ever hit it. Fast forward 20 years and Ryan Church deserves that grand slam for his dunk into the home run apple.

- Big Papi told Mike Silva and Frank Russo to shove it with his two run homer.

- I have no problem with what Johan Santana did on the mound. You criticize the team for not having fire, but than people get mad when Santana demonstrates exactly that. You want your ace to demand the ball.

- A few draft night tidbits. The Mets drafted a kid from Long Island, the Yankees an OF, and the Red Sox took Carlos Beltran’s cousin.

- It looks like there is a possibility that Phil Hughes will stick in the bullpen.

- It hurts watching Gary Sheffield move around these days. Say what you want about Sheffield’s antics in the past, but he has been nothing but a gamer in a Mets uniform.
