Kontos to Have TJ Surgery

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Bad news from Scranton George Kontos is going for a second opinion on Wednesday, but an MRI on Monday revealed a torn ulnar collateral ligament and it’s likely that Kontos will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery. Kontos was stuggling this month and his strikeout rate decreased after his promotion to AAA. The lesson from all [...]

Great show tonight. Jonathan Lucas, author of the book First, Fourth, and Last, talked about his first experience at Yankee Stadium in 1971. Girardi: Hughes a Full Fledged Reliever

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

via WFAN’s Sweeny Murti Girardi on Phil Hughes: “He is a full fledged reliever now.” Still sees him as starter long term who is filling a void right now. This is a good move by the Yankees. Howard disagreed with me last night, he believes that Hughes is one of the Yanks top five starters, [...]

Hey Guess What? Girardi is Good

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Managing a Major League Baseball team is often an exercise in futility. No matter how brilliant the Manager is, he is only as good as the team surrounding him. Imagine having a job where every move you make is second guessed, even if your decision was the correct one. That is precisely what Major League [...]

Looper’s Revenge, Sub .500, Fans as GM

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

- Welcome to the world of sub .500 baseball. – I had no idea that Milwaukee fans held this big of a grudge against Gary Sheffield. They even were chanting “Gary you Suck”. After all that stuff happened 20 years ago. Isn’t this the type of nastiness that New York, Philadelphia, and Boston fans are [...]

Report: Phillies Scouted Wang

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Interesting piece of information out of the Philadelphia Inquirer. They want pitching. Starter or reliever? “Doesn’t matter. They’re looking for anything they can get,” a rival scout said. The Phils will get one. … The Phils have even scouted Chien-Ming Wang, in case the Yankees make him available. The big question I have is, what [...]

Report: Yankees Parked on Street, Bell and Bentencourt Possible Targets

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Our main Yankees source down in Tampa has informed us that the Yankees have “cooled their interest” on Huston Street and are now looking elsewhere. The reason for this change is two-fold. First off, the Rockies are now fully entrenched in the wild card race. Secondly, Colorado’s asking price for Street was deemed to be [...]

The Thrill Is Gone, and That’s Just Fine

Monday, June 29th, 2009

I think what struck me most about the just-concluded series between the Mets and Yankees is how all of the energy has gone out of the rivalry. A check of the stands during the weekend indicated that passions simply didn’t run high. As measured by noise, back-and-forth chants, even drunken brawls, the games paled in [...]

Rivera: “I Go Home, Simple as That”

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Ian O’ Connor goes down memory lane in his morning column. It’s old hat, but worth repeating, how close the Yankees were to trading Mariano Rivera to Seattle for Felix Fermin. What do you think life without Rivera would mean? Probably no titles in 96 and 98-2000. You also got to read how “workmanlike” Rivera [...]

Mo’s 500th, an RBI, and Powerless

Monday, June 29th, 2009

- Congrats to Mariano Rivera for his 500th save and first ever RBI. I hope Yankees fans don’t take for granted the greatness of Rivera. There aren’t many more ninth innings in his arm and each remaining should be cherished. – The hardest part for a Mets fan should not be getting swept by the [...]
