Interview with Ralph Branca

By Mike Silva ~ May 2nd, 2009. Filed under: Brooklyn Dodgers.

Those that are frequent readers of the site know I am a fan of Patrick Hickey Jr. and his website Dem Brooklyn Bums. In an interview that is two years old, yet very relevant to what has been talked about recently, Patrick talks with former Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca.

Rather than the usual talk about the infamous Bobby Thomson homer, Patrick discusses the connection between those old Dodgers teams and the fans of Brooklyn. Read Branca’s recollection about how players were able to compete without computer scouting reports, sports medicine, and why the Dodgers were so successful over a 13 year period.

Branca touches on the “mental makeup” of the teams he played for. Check out this quote below:

“The reason why many believe that the Dodgers were somehow always involved in the chase for the pennant every season, despite injuries, was because the organization at Brooklyn paid very close attention to the mental makeup of the players they signed, rather than their raw ability on the field”

Think Omar Minaya and company could use a lesson from Branch Rickey and company? Take a read and enjoy. Great work Patrick.
