Grinding It Out, Pitcher Abuse Pts, Mex’s Commute

By Mike Silva ~ April 16th, 2009. Filed under: Morning Digest.

- When it was all said and done the Yanks had a nice road trip at 5-4. No one would have complained if they produced this type of trip in the middle of the season. You have to love these grind it out type of wins.

- No way the 2008 Yankees win a game like today. You have to think they sent a message to the Rays. How much longer can Tampa survive with Troy Percival as their closer? I think they need Chad Bradford and Jason Isringhausen back and healthy.

- I noticed how everyone jumped on me and DelGrippo when the news about Mike Pelfrey’s tendinitis came out. Guys, tendinitis is something that all pitchers can get. You don’t need a pitcher’s abuse point system to tell you that. Everyone is acting like Pelfrey is scheduled to see Dr. Andrews this week.

- Since when is Tom Verducci the “godfather” of keeping pitchers healthy? How did Greg Maddux jump from 155 innings in 1987 to 249 in 1988? Did I miss an injury? Nothing is absolute and I firmly believe, based on various discussions, that mechanics and build should be just as big a factor as the numbers.

- If a pitcher on this list doesn’t get hurt this year is that the equivalent of avoiding the grim reaper?

- You could tell Keith Hernandez really wants that job scouting teams from his house? Great response by Gary Cohen when he asked if that was to cut down on his 80 mile commute. For those that don’t live on the Island, like I do, Sag Harbor is a wee bit out of the way to Citi Field. Although it’s not nearly as bad as Keith makes it out to be.

- Who are these guys in the Padres bullpen? It’s like Heath Bell and Duaner Sanchez or else pray for a complete game.

- Do you get the feeling that Jake Peavy is auditioning for both the Mets and Yankees tonight?

- Seems like I hit a raw nerve with the Mets fans from my article yesterday. As predicted the attendance was down last night to about 35,000. Sources told me a large majority were disguised as empty seats, especially behind the plate. Glad to see the fans are in September form.

- Although it will be nauseating to watch the pomp and circumstance at the Yankee Stadium opener I bet the fans will show up today and the entire home stand.

- I feel bad for Xavier Nady. I liked him when he was with the Mets and I thought he was going to have a nice year in the Bronx. The timing couldn’t be any worse with his pending free agency this winter.

- When I came home, the wind had blown my garbage pails over and trash was all across my lawn. For a minute I was wondering if a group of Mets fans had been to visit me when I was out.

Enjoy opening day at the Stadium today. Listen a special edition of NYBD Radio as Darrell Berger, co-author of the book “Then Roy Said to Mickey” joins me for a special opening day show at 5pm.

  1. Metsies

This Pelfrey situation is a win-win situation for you guys. If he has a great year, you can say “I told ya so – the Verducci Effect is bunk.” If he has a poor year or gets injured, you’ll just say “This has nothing to do with being overworked, it’s just standard pitcher injuries.” You can’t have it both ways dude.

Also, no one, including Verducci, says that this is an exact science. All he did was list some guys who had a big innings jump and might be susceptible to injury. He’s not saying it’s 100% perfect. Lay off.

Also, some pitchers are freaks of nature and can handle heavy workloads without injury. These pitchers are the exceptions, not the rule. So citing guys like Maddux or Glavine to back up your assertions does nothing. You should also cite Fidrych, Gooden, Valenzuela, etc. as guys who couldn’t handle big workloads and got injured/lost effectiveness.

Legitimate question Mike (I’m assuming you’re a Met fan):

You criticize fans for not showing up to Citi Field, despite the 35,000 attendance is 7/8 capacity of the stadium. Why weren’t you in attendance then? As a Met fan, shouldn’t you be there on the 2nd game in the stadium’s history? On a 40 degree Wednesday night in April (school night)?

Ease up man, people have other commitments in life, and maybe they didn’t want to get home at 11 or 12 in cold weather when their kids have to be up for school the next day.
