Josh Paul to Lead 2009 Staten Island Yankees

Former major league catcher will take over managerial duties from Pat McMahon for the 2009 NY-Penn League Season

Staten Island, NY – With the 2009 Staten Island Yankees season only a few months away the New York Yankees have announced that veteran major league catcher Josh Paul will be taking over the managerial reigns from Pat McMahon.

The veteran catcher was drafted in the second round of the 1996 First-Year Player Draft with the 47th overall pick by the Chicago White Sox out of Vanderbilt University. The Illinois native played three seasons in the minors before making his major league debut in 1999. In the minors he average .266 over 566 career games with 37 homers and 243 RBIs.

Paul played nine seasons in the major leagues as a backup catcher with the Chicago White Sox, Cubs, Los Angeles Angels, and the Tampa Bay Rays. His career major league average was .244 with 10 homeruns, 72 RBIs and 35 doubles in 321 games. He most recently was in major league spring training with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008 before being cut and signing a minor league contract with the Houston Astros. His playing career came to an end after a season with the Round Rock Express in the Pacific Coast League in 2008.

Fans may remember him from a controversial play in Game 2 of the 2005 American League Championship Series. Against his former team with the score tied at one and in the bottom of the ninth A.J. Piersynski swung and missed a third strike pitch in the dirt. Paul along with the rest of the Angels began walking back to the dugout believe this to be the end of the inning. In actuality the home plate umpired declared that the ball was not caught and Pierzynski ran to first and was safe. This eventually led to the White Sox tying the series with the Angels after a pinch runner and a game winning double.

The 2009 season will mark Josh Paul’s first season as a professional manager and will begin on June 19, 2008 against the Brooklyn Cyclones in Keyspan Park.

    Josh, Congratulations on your major league career. Mike marshall, Timmy Bogar and you were the best ballplayers at BGHS. Sounds like a great opportunity for you to get started in another career. You.ll be a good one and someday may be managing the Yankees in the Bronx. The Cubs and Yankees are my 2 favorites team anyway. It was fun to see you a few times last year.
