Could Trevor Hoffman Be an Option?

By Mike Silva ~ November 10th, 2008. Filed under: Mike Silva.

Yesterday, Buster Olney did a story about a possible San Diego Padres “fire sale” this off season. We already know that Jake Peavy will be dealt, but there could be much more to come. The following is an excerpt from Olney’s column:

It’s very possible that in the days ahead, the face of the franchise, Trevor Hoffman — who arrived in San Diego 185 months ago, in the midst of the Fire Sale — will cut ties with the team. The Padres offered Hoffman a $4 million deal last month, which would be a $3 million reduction in salary from what he made in 2008, and friends of the pitcher wonder if San Diego is merely looking to politely nudge him out the door. Hoffman has responded by asking for a meeting with club ownership to discuss the future of the franchise.

I discussed this with Howard Megdal on the show last night. Howard was inclined to pass on Hoffman, and I tend to agree. With the thin availability of closers the possibilities exists that a closer-less team might need to turn to the 40 year old. Although, as Howard said, the Mets already have a ton of pitchers that don’t pitch well opposite their throwing side. Hoffman falls into this category (lefties hit .291 against him last season). Regardless, you can’t ignore the experience that 554 career saves brings to the table.

[...] Mike Silva at NY Baseball Digest has a post and a link from Buster Olney on the Padres playing a tough negations game with Trevor Hoffman. The last guy who I would want to come pitch for the Mets would be the most overrated reliever of the 20th and 21st century Trevor Hoffman. Hoffman would not survive 5 minutes on 126th and Roosevelt Ave. [...]
