GAME 5

By Mike Silva ~ July 24th, 2008. Filed under: 1986 Mets vs. 1998 Yankees.

CONEY MAKES SHEA HIS ISLAND
(YANKEE’S 3-2 SERIES LEAD )

David Cone felt real good while warming up. After striking out two in the first inning it was clear that the Mets would have their hands full. When it was all over Coney would pitch a complete game 4 hitter, striking out 8 and walking only 1, in the Yankees 5-0 victory. The win would send the Yankees back to the Stadium for Game 6 on Saturday night.

Very little offense was necessary on this night, but Paul O’ Neill made an early statement against Bobby Ojeda (5 innings, 3 runs) with a two run homer. Bernie Williams and Shane Spencer would cap the night with two homers in the 6th inning off of Rick Aguilera. The lone Mets threat came in the bottom of the fifth with two on and two out Davey Johnson sent Danny Heep up to pinch hit for Ojeda. Cone buckled down and blew Heep away on three pitches.

“We really had no chance out there” said Davey Johnson. Joe Torre reminded the media that one win sounds nice, but that the team knows “it will be a dogfight to close out these guys”. The Mets hope in the end they can pull off the same game six and seven magic as the 86 series. This time it will be harder as it will have to happen on the road in one of the most intimidating environments. Ron Darling will face David Wells. Game time is 8:00 PM.

David Cone was not a Met for the 1986 season. He didn’t join the Mets until after the season. You need to redo this matchup.

David Cone started for the Yankees in 1998 and that is why he was in this game…. I am confused where you see him associated with the Mets.
